The best holiday song

Too many holiday songs are, for my taste, overly facile.  Who needs these silly trifles about flying reindeer and leaping lords and demonically animated snowmen? They only undermine the appealing severity of the truly worthy noels. That’s why my favorite Christmas carol is the one about the three wise men, the trio of kings, the tripartite magi, the clutch of gift-bearing seers drawn to give the newborn messiah what all little babies crave: gold, frankincense, and puréed pears.
