Sarah McLachlan would have passed me by in 1997. I think because the song would not have appealed to my 18/19 year old ears at the time. Now, older than I’d like to admit, and perhaps a little wiser, I think that’s a great choice of song. Have a great 2024!

This is such a sad song! But it certainly feels reflective and fitting for the year end. I very much enjoyed listening to it. I think you are a little hard on Christmas music - but I also think it is difficult to separate childhood nostalgia from actual quality at this time of year so maybe you are right. I would also advocate for Fleet Foxes’ β€œWinter White Hymnal” and β€œA Long December” by Counting Crows as Christmas adjacent songs. I guess those titles are both a little more on the nose though. Never heard of Mannheim Steamroller before. That is an extremely exuberant version of β€œCarol of the Bells”!!

Thank you for a lovely year, on here and elsewhere. I hope 2024 is kind to you both.

Yes. This is the one. Gosh, I'm a mess 😭 Thanks for this, and the commentary. It's all just merry and right.

I've fallen way behind on my reading here and I'm trying to catch up, but I just want to say I haven't thought about Sarah McLachlan in about 20 years, and this was such a lovely reminder. My mom played her albums constantly in the late 90s when we were living in British Columbia, so for me she's rainy cedar forest music, but I get the wintry vibes too.
