The poll results obviously indicate that the human brain - even the vastly superior minds that are WAS fans - could not conceive of how good a WAS PB would be, and rejected the notion out of fear of the unknown. Now that we have this magnificent proof of concept, a revisit to the polls would surely yield the correct response of 100% in favour.
It’s still a no from me. They are great in their place (i.e. the eighties) and I love this cover but do we actually need new power ballads? I think not.
💔 But maybe it's what the world has been missing! More bombastic love songs....less bombastic world leaders thinking about bombs? As Lauren says, a true power ballad is a powerful force, but pretty sure We Are Scientists have the potential to save us all
I yearn for the simple comforts of the 80s, a decade I did not live through but was, according to the movies I've seen repeatedly, perfect in every way.
Yeah, the not living through it might be the problem! Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 80s but I do not want to go back 😂 No one needs the return of the puffball skirt!
Releasing a true power ballad without adequate testing and precautions (i.e. a protective barrier of 9 other songs) would be too dangerous! The raw strength would undoubtedly melt our eardrums and subject the boys to myriad lawsuits. An acoustic demo introducing the idea without fully immersing the listener is an industry standard safety practice.
I admit to being a little surprised that this song holds up reasonably well in stripped down form. Of course, now I want to hear Keith sing it when he has a cold....
Yeeaah, loved that! Concerned by the poll results though; 88% think power ballads don't suck, but 56% don't want you to record some? Whaaat? I'd take that as a challenge to prove them wrong, don't give up on "these dreams" 🙏to Crom
Wow! That narrative took some surprise turns! Great song though. If you are going to cover a power ballad, this is a strong choice imo. It’s definitely perked up what has been a pretty dank day so far. I had never really considered Bernie Taupin’s existence outside of his writing partnership with Elton John so that was interesting. I also particularly enjoyed the knifed tyre illustration and accompanying caption. Thank you for making me laugh.
This is another one that honestly gets better with each listen. It’s a beautiful version of the original. Thank you.
I think maybe more of this series should feature songs by female vocalists. Other than the REM cover, which I will never stop raving about, those have definitely been my favourites.
Incase you're conducting research, I read this bespectacled.

Perhaps a compromise, bombastic world leaders singing love songs?
I feel like Boris Yeltsin might have done this...
You know he would. Off his face on vodka stumbling round with reckless abandon.
Persuasive words, Catherine! I guess if anyone can pull it off….
I am struggling to get past all the 80s hair tbh!
It's ok, don't think the boys could achieve such volume since the cfc ban. Hairsprays are not what they used to be

I'm with you Lou. There are enough, perhaps too many, PBs in existence already.
Sometimes we don't know what we need until we get it ✨
Aha, but this is recorded as a ballad, not a power ballad 👀 So proof of concept remains non-existent (fwiw I voted in favour of such a song).

I understand now. I ain't no scientist! 🙏

It is indeed lugubrious in London. Thanks for the aural tea. And for teaching me a new word.

Another excellent Ape; one of the best yet! Bravo!
This missive is particularly unhinged and I thank you for it from the bottom of my Heart.
