So, so happy to see this notification pop up on my phone tonight. After my first day back teaching year 6, it’s a welcome treat!
As Villate says, there is much food for thought here. I love that you’ve named this category of song, albeit Janor Swabwos could be a character from one of the less auspicious Star Wars series. I wonder if Parasite by Coach Party fits the bill, or Vertigo by The Libertines. Are there candidates on your later records? I’m struggling to think of any from the last three.
I've seen the Ed comment about it but I'd be interested to know - could Keith or Chris give us a synopsis of the plot for the Slow Down video? Or do it independently and see if they come up with the same thing!
Man do I love a big dumb rock song. My lizard brain absolutely basks in a janor swabwo the way an actual lizard might bask in the sun.
Is a janor swabwo best defined by the inverse of the Acoustic Test, as a song that gets better the louder you play it? Not just in the way that all songs are better louder, but as its primary, possibly only, redeeming quality?
this is all wildly entertaining! in my younger days, i bled pumpkin, so check out "tales of scorched earth" by the smashing pumpkins. no doubt this qualifies. prob also "silverf*ck" from siamese dream. they're not trying to hook you, just rock your socks off, then get back to your regularly scheduled programming. enjoy!
I appreciated the Janor journey it sent me on. After listening to those excellent Smashing Pumpkins ones, Spotify played Soundgarden. The Spotify algorithm has learned to identify Janors! That then reminded me of All Them Witches, because the singers voice is a bit like Chris Cornell's.... Tiger's Pit might also be a Janor
I've had nineteen hours to regain my composure, but I remain apoplectic that Central AC was even mooted in this conversation, by the creators of said masterpiece.
Sure, it's energetic enough to set my limbs flailing uncontrollably in different directions (most unhelpful if I'm listening whilst driving, or performing open heart surgery), but it has a genuinely singalong melody; it's my favourite tune on Barbara and, some days, in the entire WAS back catalogue.
By the Noel Gallagher test, I bet it would sound great acoustic. Have Keith and Chris somehow forgotten that, barring the couplet that opens the second verse, they drenched the whole thing in heavenly harmonies?
I'm not sure I'm going to pass the Janor Swabwo module, but I did have fun compiling a playlist of songs you can wild out to. (I tried to avoid bands you'd mentioned...might have meandered into psychedelia.)
OK, I think if I try and make my personal definitive playlist of janor swabwos I'd be here all day as I think you've come up with a term that captures my musical sweet spot. But I'd like to mention Ash: their back catalogue is chock-a-block full of these bangers: Lose Control, Numbskull, Shark, Like a God, Brain Dead...all absolutely bangers
As is Slow Down! Genuinely one of my all-time faves and would absolutely love to see it live one day.
Yeah, it brings up the question of how to say Janor Swabwo. Not only may I have been misinterpreting, I might have been mispronouncing too. For the record I've been saying Jay-nor Swab-wo.
Nice! I feel a proper Janor would be worthy of a woah. Realised I've also been saying Swayb-wo. I think it depends on what musical style of Janor I was imagining at that time

I'm absolutely furious you got to the Star Wars joke before I could.
Is You've Lost Your Shit a janor swabwos? Too hooky?
Dunno. It’s very catchy.

God! This might be the best example provided yet. 👌

So. Much. Criteria. To. Compute. 🤯

Ash are a good call. Such a great band and the first band I saw live. More years ago than I care to remember though.
I repeated the word 'bangers' and now I won't be able to sleep.
Lots to mull over in this one, gentlemen. I'll be making a playlist and thinking deep thoughts all day today.
As a janor swabwos, I think slow down really serves up such a generous helping of ‘n’
slow down is a jaNor swabwos
(maybe even a jaÑor swabwos?)

I've been saying 'janner swab-woah'

Perfect timing, I'm headed to Baker Street for work this afternoon 🤣
